Physical Education
Overview
We aim to promote a Healthy Active Lifestyle by providing the children with a fun, stimulating and inclusive Physical Education. Our school will motivate children to participate enthusiastically and take pride in both their and others achievements whilst engaging in a range of School Sports and Skills. In this way, all children will aim high to reach their full potential and gain a ‘Flying Start’ at Saltergate Schools.
EYFS
In EYFS children engage in active play and learning throughout the day with outdoor physical activity included as an important part of the daily routine. In Reception, children also take part in PE sessions based on the fundamental movement skills of agility, balance and co-ordination. This is developed by using the REAL PE foundation platform. Stories, games and songs enable the children to access the sessions in a fun and engaging way.
KS1
In KS1 children continue to work on the progression of fundamental skills by following the REAL PE, dance and gym programme. Real P.E. is centred on active learning with the children getting to sing, play games, develop skills and set their own targets enabling achievement by all. It is a fun and interactive scheme with stories, online resources and task cards used to enhance Physical, Cognitive, Social, Personal, Creative skills as well as Health and Fitness.
Active sessions and outdoor learning continue to play a routine part in KS1 in order to promote a healthy active lifestyle for each child. Pupil’s skills and experience are enhanced by providing a wide range of specialist teaching support from St. Aidan's and Harrogate Town Football Club Academy. Extracurricular clubs are available for the children with festivals and competitions provided by the Harrogate and District Wellbeing partnership.
KS2
In KS2 progression of skills is achieved through the delivery of the REAL PE, gym and dance platform. The programme continues to build on the basic fundamental skills whilst introducing the children to setting themselves targets during PB challenges and promoting healthy competition. Physical, Cognitive, Social, Personal, Creative, Health and Fitness cogs continue to underpin the skill development. Year 6 pupils will take part in swimming lessons in order to learn a range of strokes and lifesaving skills.
We aim to broaden the pupils skills and experience by providing a wide range of specialist teaching support from St. Aidan's and HTAFC as well as offering a wide variety of extracurricular clubs. Pupils also have the opportunity to take part each half-term in intra school competition. As part of the Harrogate and District Wellbeing Partnership pupils also have the opportunity to participate alongside other school in festivals and competitions. These events promote the School Games Values of determination, honesty, passion, respect, self-belief and teamwork, all of which we refer to and use at Saltergate.
